Quotes

Quotes from a work of literature I'm reading for the first time, and a film that I just saw for the second time. Tell me the work from which either quote was taken, and I will leave you a message on your blog telling you that you won. If you don't guess, you can't win!

The book
"Is it possible!" repeated D------, bitterly. "Yes. And a beautiful world we live in when it is possible, and when many other things are possible, and not only possible, but done–done, see you!–under that sky there, every day. Long live the Devil. Let us go on."
The film
"How I envy the young. For them everything is so clear. Things seem to be either one way or another. It is only with a little age that you begin to see life as a series of compromises. But even in compromising one must draw a line."
Using google, the IMDB, wikiquote, or similar searches is cheating, of course.

i know both of them! tale of two cities is my single favorite novel, and that is a memorable quote. Defarge is walking Mr. Lorry up to see Dr. Manette for the first time, and says that quote.

the second line is from swing kids, where the german officer is over for dinner and the boy gives him the what-for.

good stuff!

Tale of two cities and... I can't remember the name. Something about kids. The line is from when the German is getting told off by the kid.

Hey Derby,

Never seen Swing Kids - and thought the first quote sounded more like Dostoevsky. Those great writers all sound alike after a while ; )

You should check out this blog that Kevin and I started - I think you might get a kick out of it, and the more people that vote, the better!

Hey, re: your comment on my Xanga:
remember that we can't always judge an ethos by the behavior of the individuals who claim it for their own. Ane angry Buddhist don't stop the show. Some Christians can become real buttholes if they start disagreeing on Calvinism or child baptism or whatever. That doesn't mean Christ isn't beneficial for society (since that, and not ultimate spiritual truth, is what we're discussing, I can say that.)
